THE SOMME

One Day Standard Tour

At 0900hrs your guide will collect you at Arras Station. We will meet you at the glass doors.

SERRE and the Pals Battalions: We will see the largest cemetery on the Somme, Serre Road No 2 and scene of some of the most tragic fighting - where the Pals Battlaions were wiped out on the 1st of July.

At Beaumont Hamel we encounter the 51st HIGHLAND DIVISION MEMORIAL and the preserved trenches in NEWFOUNDLAND MEMORIAL PARK. Here we will see an authentic section of the original 1916 Frontline, discuss tactics, and talk about why it all went so badly wrong for the British on the 1st of July, 1916.

Just across the valley of the River Ancre at THE ULSTER TOWER, situated on the German stronghold of the Schwaben Redoubt, a little way along the July 1st Frontline, we arrive at the massive BRITISH MEMORIAL OF THE MISSING OF THE SOMME at Thiepval, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and the largest British War Memorial.
We then visit THE THIEPVAL VISITOR CENTRE.

The Australian and British battalions fought through from Pozieres towards Thiepval, finally taking MOUQUET FARM as the autumn of 1916 arrived. After Mouquet Farm we visit THE FIRST AUSTRALIAN DIVISION MEMORIAL. This area along Pozieres Ridge, was the scene of much bloody attrition in the high summer of the Somme Campaign. Many Australians died here: POZIERES RIDGE, THE WINDMILL, THE TANKS CORPS MEMORIAL and CASUALTY CORNER. We retrace the path of the soldiers up to the line at Pozieres and stop at Casualty Corner. Every soldier wounded on Pozieres Ridge passed through this key triage point. Our next stop will be to see the awe-inspiring LOCHNAGAR MINE CRATER, LA BOISSELLE and to talk about tunnelling and underground warfare.

Now we'll visit the new Monash Visitors Centre, opening May 2018, (where you will be able to have lunch), and THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING, another Lutyens’ masterpiece. We will see THE CRASH SITE OF THE RED BARON and visit THE BATTLEFIELD AT LE HAMEL, where the Australians fought alongside the Americans, under the command of Sir John Monash, on “the Blackest Day for the German Army”, when the Advance to Victory commenced on the 8th of August 1918. We will finally return to Amiens at 1800hrs.
